ASIMO and Science Classes

AshimoASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) is a robot that walks on two legs developed by Honda Motor Company Limited. A robot walking on two legs is very unique in the world; ASIMO stands 130cm tall and weighs 54 kg. ASIMO has already been working as a guide and instructor of many events and at National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (abbr: Miraikan), an ASIMO takes an important role as an instructor.

ASIMO can smoothly walk on a flat surface and self adjust the length of its stride. ASIMO balances with weight shift of the upper body and as a result, ASIMO can also turn without overbalancing and go up and down a staircase. It has been said that making a robot run is difficult, however, ASIMO can run. The difference between walking and running is that there is a moment when both legs are off the ground during running. ASIMO can control the attitude when its legs are mid-stride and both in the air. ASIMO can run at a maximum speed of six kilometers per hour!

Ashimo"ASIMO's natural science classes by Miraikan" have been conducted at several schools all over Japan. It is an activity to effectively introduce advanced science and technology as part of Honda's social action programs for children who are responsible for the next generation. Miraikan supervises the educational program using ASIMO. Two science museums in Kyoto and Izumo cities developed a model program in 2005. Based on the program, each museum in each area made their separate program. In 2006, classes were conducted at Suginaku-ku in Tokyo and in Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Noshiro, Izumo and Saitama cities. In 2007, classes are being conducted in Akashi, Miyazaki and Noshiro cities. Once ASIMO appears in front of audiences, it draws loud applause. Directly seeing and touching real cutting-edge technology creates a lasting impression and makes for a pleasant surprise. Learning through hands-on activities will inspire students to think for themselves rather than only memorizing from textbooks.

ASIMO's heartwarming demonstration can be seen twice daily at Miraikan, performance times are 11:00am-11:10am and 2:00pm-2:10pm. As the Research and Development of ASIMO is still developing, ASIMO is continually evolving. It is an amazing experience to see results of this development of cutting-edge science and technology that ASIMO represents.
