Blessed with Hot Springs (Onsen) and Only a Few Hours from Tokyo


Niigata is an area with heavy snowfall, where skiing started in Japan, which produces fine rice and the best sake in Japan, and home to many fine hot springs. There are hot springs located on the oceanfront, ones with beautiful views of the snow, and ones renowned for water quality that is good for the health and beauty. 

 

 Akakura Onsen

Nagano -> Myoko-kogen Sta. (40 min by Shin-etsu Line)
This hot spring resort offers visitors skiing and snowboarding activities. An onsen sommelier is on hand to provide information on the benefits of hot spring bathing and tips on bathing effectively. 

 

 Iwamuro Onsen

Niigata -> Iwamuro Sta. (45 min by Echigo Line)
This hot spring resort is especially recommended for gourmets craving the seafood from the Sea of Japan and the delicious rice. There are many sake breweries and most hotels will be happy to arrange a sake brewery tour for you.

 

 Senami Onsen

Niigata -> Murakami Sta. (55 min by Rapid Rakuraku Train Murakami)
Visitors can enjoy watching the sun set over the sea while listening to the surf. This castle town has old samurai residences and historic buildings. 

 

 Tsukioka Onsen

Niigata -> Toyosaka Sta. (25 min by Hakushin Line) -> Shuttle bus
This hot spring resort is famous for the exfoliating and whitening abilities of the water that beautifies the skin. Visitors can also enjoy sample 95 kinds of Niigata’s local sake at this hot spring resort. 

 

 Echigoyuzawa Onsen

Echigoyuzawa Sta.
There are 13 ski trails in this area. This place is famous as the setting of “Yukiguni” (Snow Country), a novel written by Nobel Prize laurate Kawabata Yasunari. 

 

 Matsunoyama Onsen

Echigoyuzawa -> Matsudai Sta. (50 min by Hokuetsu Kyuko Hokuhoku Line)
Located in the middle of mountains, this hot spring resort is famous for its beneficial waters and is considered as one of the three great medicinal hot springs in Japan.

From July 29 to September 17, 2012, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 will be held in areas around Matsunoyama Onsen. This festival will exhibit about 200 pieces of modern art set in the local natural surroundings and wilderness.
