Dramatic Osaka/Kansai - Osaka Station City

Welcome to Kansai
Enjoy the Cities and Stations of Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Nara

 JR-WEST Rail Pass
The Kansai Region consists of Osaka and the unique surrounding cities including Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe. These cities are close together allowing travelers to enjoy the various cities if time is limited. This article is especially for foreign travelers who want to enjoy Kansai to the fullest during a short stay. This introduces a helpful traveler's companion, the JR-WEST Rail Pass.

This convenient pass is only available for JR, the main railway in Kansai. The pass can be used for most JR trains in the Kansai area so you need not worry about purchasing tickets every time you want to ride. The pass makes traveling by train during your stay easy and smooth. The trains operate until late at night and the price is very reasonable.

Upon arrival at Kansai Airport, go directly to the JR counter recognizable by the green signboards common to JR stations in Japan. Catch the Limited Express Haruka to get to your mainland destination. It takes about 60 minutes to Osaka via next station, Shin-Osaka. It takes about 75 minutes on a direct train to Kyoto. The one-way cost for a non-reserved seat on Haruka to Kyoto Station from Kansai Airport Station is normally 2,980 yen but a one-day pass of 2,000 yen allows you to take unlimited rides in a designated area for the whole day. This pass is a great saving! If you forget to buy a pass at the airport, you can get one at Kyoto Station, Osaka Station, Shin-Osaka Station, Sannomiya Station, Kyobashi Station, Tennoji Station, Nara Station and others.

 Enjoy Stations and Towns
Kyo-no Fuyu-no Tabi (winter traveling in Kyoto), the special exhibition during the limited period of time, will be held in Kyoto this winter. Exclusive cultural assets, such as statues of Buddha and ceiling paintings not usually open to the public will be exhibited from January 7 through March 18, 2012. (Schedule of some temples is different.)

Facilities inside the station as well the cities have become tourist hotspots.

Inside the Kyoto Station gates is a direct connection to an electronics retail store. JR Kyoto Isetan Department Store is located in the station building and has a wide variety of Kyoto souvenirs. The tourist information center, "Kyo-Navi," is located on the 2nd floor concourse.

"Osaka Station City," which opened in May, 2011, is a new fashion and gourmet spot with large-scale stores and specialty stores on the south and north sides of the station. The second basement of JR Osaka Mitsukoshi Isetan Department Store is especially recommended for visitors from abroad to find the many delicious sweets. There you will also find many fashionable cosmetics shops and designer brand shops. Lucua is a fashion complex for women. There are eight squares in the station. Toki-no-Hiroba (Space and Time Square) with its landmark golden and silver clocks is located above the wide bridge over the platforms and has a dramatic view of trains coming and going. Yawaragi-no-Hiroba (Relaxation Square) has a modern Japanese atmosphere and Tenku-no-Noen (Farm in the Sky) with its many beautiful flowers is a good place to take a rest while shopping. Don't miss the renewed Osaka Station!

Osaka Station, as well as Kyoto Station, has multilingual signs and tourist information centers.

Just outside of the South Exit is a do-it-yourself make-up lounge called "Angelbe" that is very popular for women (300 yen per hour). Users can try new cosmetic products by Shiseido and other brands, touch up their makeup, and relax with a free herb tea service, in a semi-private booth that can also be used as a dressing room.

The JR-WEST Rail Pass includes train service to four World Heritage Sites in the Kansai Area. Enjoy traveling in Kansai with this convenient rail pass!
